El día 30 de diciembre de 2014 nos reunimos en el Centro de Estudios Estratégicos de la UEO (Unidad de Estrategia y Operaciones) para la tradicional partida de Navidad. Teniendo en cuenta las fechas, nada más apropiado que jugar una batalla de la Segunda Guerra Mundial en los frios bosques nevados de Europa Occidental, ambientada en las proximidades del pueblo (ficticio) de Montperoux-Sur-Mont en 1944, donde las tropas aliadas, al mando de los oficiales Seridan y Robertson deben romper la línea de frente, en un cruce de caminos fuertemente defendido por varias divisiones blindadas alemanas al mando de Von Junkers y Bönal.

On December 30, 2014 we met at the Center for Strategic Studies of the UEO (Unit of Strategy and Operations) for the traditional Christmas battle. According the date, nothing more appropriate than playing a battle of the Second World War in the cold snowy forests of Western Europe, set near of the (fictitious) village of Montperoux-Sur-Mont in 1944, where Allied troops, commanding officers Robertson and Seridan must break the front line in a crossroads point heavily defended by several German armored divisions commanded by Von Junkers and Bönal.

La batalla se llevó a cabo con ejércitos equilibrados, destacando en ambos los elementos pesados como los M-26 Pershing en el lado aliado y los Königstiger en el lado alemán. Las distintas unidades hicieron su aparición mediante tiradas de dados, lo cual daba cierta incertidumbre sobre la disponibilidad de las fuerzas.

The battle took place with balanced armies, with special relevance of heavy elements in both sides like the M-26 Pershing on the Allied side and Königstiger on the German side. Units made their appearance by dice rolls, which gave some uncertainty about the availability of forces.

La Batalla / The Battle
La batalla comenzó con la entrada en acción de los panzers, que ante el avance frontal y abierto de los tanques aliados, optaron por una formación en cuña blindada atacando por el centro, aprovechando la velocidad, blindaje y potencia de fuego de los Panthers abriéndose paso por el camino, seguidos de los vulnerables y vetustos Panzer III que servirían como apoyo a la acción ofensiva. Por el lado izquierdo, dos pesados Königstiger avanzaban lentamente, para servir como contención ante cualquier intento de avance aliado.

The battle began with the action of the panzers, which seeing the front and open advance of the Allied tanks, executed an armored attack in wedge formation at the central sector, taking advantage of the speed, armor and firepower of the Panthers breaking through by the road, followed by the vulnerable and old Panzer III that would serve as support for offensive action. On the left side, two heavy Königstiger advanced slowly, to serve as containment of any attempt of advance by the Allies.
Por su parte, los aliados, desplegados por Robertson a lo largo de todo el frente, efectuaron un avance frontal de todos los efectivos, intentando adelantar una unidad de reconocimiento por despejado flanco derecho alemán.

For their part, the Allies deployed by Robertson along the whole front, made a frontal advance of all troops, trying also to advance a recognition unit through the clear right flank of the german lines.
No tardaron en comenzar los disparos y explosiones, además de la llegada de refuerzos para ambos bandos. La infantería alemana avanzó tras los tanques para apoyar la ofensiva central, mientras que la infantería americana tomó posiciones en las ruinas de una vieja casa.

Shooting and explosions started soon. Also came reinforcements for both sides. German infantry advanced behind the tanks to support the central offensive, while the American infantry took up positions in the ruins of an old house.
La ocupación de la casa por parte de las tropas norteamericanas tuvo un coste terrible en vidas, ya que los cañones alemanes de 105mm LeFH iniciaron un fuerte bombardeo de artillería sobre la posición, para facilitar el posterior asalto de la infantería motorizada alemana que se dirigía hacia allí a toda velocidad en sus vehículos.

The occupation of the house by American troops had a terrible cost in lives, as the Germans started a strong artillery bombardment on the position with leFH 105mm cannons , to facilitate the subsequent assault of German motorized infantry coming toward there at full speed in their vehicles.
Los combates se recrudecieron, en un intercambio de proyectiles masivo a corta distancia, que sembró el caos y la muerte en los alrededores de la casa destruida. La infantería norteamericana fue barrida por la artillería, pero la importancia de la posición requirió que fuese reemplazada por varios pelotones de infantería de refuerzo para evitar que cayese en manos alemanas.

Major combat in a massive exchange of bullets at close range, which wreaked chaos and death around the destroyed house. The American infantry was swept by artillery, but the importance of the position required that they were replaced by several platoons of reinforcement infantry to prevent it from falling into German hands.
Robertson recibía llamadas enfurecidas del mismísimo General Patton, enfurecido ante la falta de avances, mientras la destrucción era desoladora en el sector central y sus tropas de reconocimiento perseguían a las unidades alemanas por el campo de batalla sin ningún éxito, al no darles alcance.
Por otra parte, llegaron refuerzos alemanes, un grupo de SdKfz 234/2 "Puma" que se había extraviado por los pueblos franceses al no entender bien las indicaciones de los lugareños, llegando con retraso al campo de batalla.

Robertson received angry telephone calls from General Patton himself, angered by the lack of progress, while the destruction was devastating in the central sector and reconnaissance troops chased the German units on the battlefield without any success, not catching them.
Moreover, German reinforcements arrived, a group of SdKfz 234/2 "Puma" which was disorientated in the French villages because did not understand well the indications given by the locals, arriving late at the battlefield.

Resultado / Results: Victoria alemana / German victory
Pese al importante esfuerzo de los aliados por romper el frente, su ataque chocó de frente con las firmes defensas alemanas, cuyo poder blindado pudo esta vez desarticular por completo la ofensiva, permitiendo a los alemanes reafirmar sus líneas y desorganizando a las fuerzas aliadas en la zona, que tuvieron que retirarse para reemplazar sus bajas.
Aquella fue una noche de contrastes, entre el sonido del brindis de las copas llenas de buen champán francés en el Estado Mayor de la Wehrmacht y los gritos enfurecidos de los generales a través de los teléfonos de campaña en el campamento aliado.

Despite the significant efforts of the Allies to break the front, their attack collided head with the strong German defenses, which armoured power could completely disrupt the offensive this time, allowing the Germans to reaffirm their lines and disrupting the Allied forces in the area, which had to be retreated to replace their losses.That was a night of contrasts, between the sound of toasting glasses full of good French champagne in the Headquarters of the Wehrmacht and the angry shouts of the generals through field telephones in the Allied camp.
